Fight, Flight, Freeze, Appease
In this episode of heartbeat, Dr. Brooke Stuart dives into a discussion on fight, flight, freeze and appease. When we choose to connect and return to the present moment, we begin to generate awareness, which carries light and grows our capacity to be with and hold the spectrum of states light to dark, negative to positive, etc.
- What Is Stress?: Stress is the total mind-body response experienced when we perceive that we do not have the resources to handle a life experience. At its core, stress is a disturbance in homeostasis that results in a series of psychological and physiological adaptations.
- The Stress Response: How we respond to stress determines our experience of it and our reality creation- physiologically and psychologically speaking.
- Fight, Flight, Freeze, Appease: When survival mode takes over, our system focuses in on protection and preservation from the threat- fight, flight, freeze, appease.
- Moving Through Survival Mode: In this mode, we often disconnect, divide and disassociate from the perceived threat. This is an intelligent adaptation in the moment but can become problematic in overdrive, especially when we allow this to become the state we live in consistently. We can shift this through choosing to connect to all that we are, all that we have, and all that we can do. This mobility connects us with our power source and gives us access to the answers that align with who we are and where we are going.
- Integration: At first, it can be difficult to move through and alchemize the stress response- shifting from a state of contraction to expansion. However, the more we take the time to review the past, receive the lessons and form our present moment choices accordingly, the more coordinated, mobile and able to access the answers we become in each moment moving forward. This is the essence of integration- where we become increasingly calm, clear and coherent as we work with the parts of self and still allow our lives to reflect and our choices to represent deep forms of authentic self expression.
